You’ve completed treatment, but don’t feel like you’re out of the woods – read Steps 9-12 to help your cancer journey continue.
These articles came from the steps I wrote specifically for cancer patients as they take this journey. Here they are.
Write them down, print them out and follow them to get started.
Know exactly what you have. Copy the language from your portal and use it in your research so you can ask better, more precise questions at your doctor’s appointment.
Your first doctor is just the start. Seek out advocacy groups, experts, academic centers, and always get a second opinion.
Pause and write down what you need and what matters most to you now. This will guide your decisions moving forward.
Get organized and assign support. Identify caregivers based on your needs and wants. Look for resources through the advocacy groups, hospital, and your insurance company.
Who treats you matters. Choose specialists who focus on your cancer and are connected to the latest research.
The right tests guide the right care. Ask about biomarkers, genomics, imaging, and immune profiling- anything that better defines your disease.
Understand your options. Know the standard of care but also follow medical meetings to see what is coming down the pike. Ask why a treatment is recommended and how it aligns with your goals.
Clinical trials can offer the most advanced care. Ask early if there’s one right for you.
Take time to reset both physically and emotionally. Your life may look different now, and that’s okay.
Your support system matters. Acknowledge and stay connected to the people who helped you through.
Stay on top of follow-ups and tests. Early detection and vigilance are critical.
Understand your family’s risk. Share information and take steps to protect those you love.

12 Steps to Beating Cancer in a Broken Medical System
This book was written as a result of my 30 journals I kept while living and beating cancer. It shares every detail of what I did right, what I did wrong, and what I didn’t do at all. If you want to learn from my personal story, read Fatal to Fearless.
It’s not just a roadmap – it’s a personal memoir about how to live your life while saving your life.
A two-time cancer survivor, published author, and business leader, Kathy’s spent the last 30 years working to fix what’s broken in our healthcare system — so others can heal faster, better, and with more clarity.
